The Perfect 14-Day Vietnam Itinerary: North to South
A balanced two-week Vietnam itinerary covering Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Hue, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta without rushing.
Two weeks is an excellent amount of time for a first journey through Vietnam. This route combines the country's defining cities, UNESCO heritage, dramatic landscapes and regional cuisine while keeping travel days manageable.
Days 1–2: Hanoi
Begin in the capital's Old Quarter. Explore the Temple of Literature, Hoan Kiem Lake and French colonial streets, then spend an evening discovering bun cha, egg coffee and traditional desserts. A private guide helps you understand the history behind the busy street life.
Days 3–4: Ninh Binh
Travel south by private car to Ninh Binh. Take a sampan through Trang An's limestone caves, cycle between rice paddies and climb Hang Mua for a panoramic sunset. Staying overnight avoids the busiest day-trip hours and reveals the countryside at its calmest.
Days 5–6: Ha Long or Lan Ha Bay
Board a quality overnight cruise with a private balcony cabin. Kayak through sheltered lagoons, visit a cave and watch the karst islands change colour at sunset. Lan Ha Bay is often quieter, while Ha Long Bay offers the most iconic scenery.
Day 7: Fly to Hue
Return to Hanoi and fly to central Vietnam. Settle beside the Perfume River and enjoy a relaxed evening before exploring the imperial monuments.
Day 8: Imperial Hue
Visit the Citadel, Thien Mu Pagoda and one or two royal tombs. Hue's cuisine is refined and distinctive, so include a local lunch or an evening tasting menu.
Days 9–10: Hoi An
Drive across the Hai Van Pass to Hoi An. Walk the lantern-lit old town, cycle through Tra Que village and join a cooking class. Keep one afternoon free for tailoring, An Bang Beach or simply enjoying a riverside café.
Days 11–12: Ho Chi Minh City
Fly from Da Nang to the south. Discover colonial landmarks, contemporary neighbourhoods and the city's energetic food scene. On the second day, choose the Cu Chi Tunnels or a deeper city experience focused on history, architecture and markets.
Day 13: Mekong Delta
Travel to Ben Tre or Can Tho for canals, orchards and family workshops. An overnight stay provides a more authentic experience than a rushed return trip and allows an early visit to a local market.
Day 14: Departure
Return to Ho Chi Minh City with enough time for your onward flight. Keep the final schedule flexible and allow generous time for traffic.
How to make the route comfortable
Use domestic flights for Hanoi–Hue and Da Nang–Ho Chi Minh City. Choose private transfers for Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay and the Mekong Delta. Limit one-night stays, travel with light luggage and reserve at least one unplanned half-day. Families and couples can slow the route further by adding an extra night in Hoi An or removing one major stop.
This itinerary is a framework rather than a fixed package. VietnamKool can adjust hotel style, room configuration, halal dining, private guides and activities to match your priorities and travel dates.
